Over the years, Bester has often included guitars in his multimedia collage paintings, and has also produced several wall sculptures that, like this example, have medical drips attached to them. By reinforcing the idea of (social) regulation implicit in the Afrikaans saying: “Dans soos die musiek speel.” (You must dance to the music), these drips are a timely reminder that the idea of freedom – suggested through the expressive power of music, song and dance - is often no more than an illusion.
