William Kentridge, Copper notes, state 9,
 2005, Drypoint edition of 14

Downstairs at 34LONG  12 Dec 2006 to 26 Jan 2007

Celebrating two fabulous years of art in Long Street, 34Long ends the old year and rings in the new with two tremendous exhibitions. Upstairs, FranÁois van Reenenís solo show Monster Love; downstairs, a group show entitled Twogether.

Twogether will include works by several artists, but will focus on two perennial favourites: William Kentridge and Marlene Dumas, both of whom are set to be newsmakers in 2007.

William Kentridge has spent over a year creating animated film sequences in his autograph charcoal-erase technique for his production of Mozartís Magic Flute, set in Egypt, which will be presented in Cape Town and Johannesburg in 2007. Twogether anticipates this fantastic production with a carefully selected mixture of works in different media by this versatile and much-loved artist.

Marlene Dumas, who was born in Kuilsriver but lives in Holland, will have an important exhibition at the South African National Gallery in 2007. This exhibition is sure to be a visual feast, and will certainly increase public awareness of her astonishing work. 34Long is delighted to include selected new works by Marlene Dumas in Twogether.

Though works by Kentridge and Dumas will form the nucleus of the exhibition, they will by no means be alone. There will also be works by popular artists like Norman Catherine, Esther Mahlangu, Willie Bester and Matthew Hindley.

As usual, there will also be some international work, most notably graphics of low edition by Chiho Aoshima, the young Japanese artist who has taken the international art world by storm.

Takashi Murakami has by now become a well-known name in Cape Town, largely through the endeavor of 34 Long. He will be represented by some of the very newest items from his studio.

Twogether, coupled with Monster Love, promises to be a dazzling introduction to 2007.
