PRESS RELEASE

MultiPlus – 34 Long, Cape Town

18 July 18h00 - 5 August 2006

MultiPlus, an exhibition of editioned works, opens at 34 LONG on 18 July at 18h00. Like its forerunner last year, it is sure to be a winter highlight for Cape Town’s art scene.

Selected works by established South African artists and some celebrated international artists like Takashi Murakami, Damien Hirst,Yoshitomo Nara and Marlene Dumas will be on show.

A special feature on the show will be an edition of William Kentridge’s Atlas Confession, an exceptional work of chine collé black paper figures on spreads of unique maps from Stielers Hand-Atlas of 1906, published for Documenta XI in Kassel. Kentridge’s Black box/Chambre noir , a stereoscopic representation in an edition of one hundred commissioned by the Deutsche Guggenheim in 2003, will also be available to the discerning collector.

Takashi Murakami’s cutely noxious little characters KaiKai and KiKi will be there. They are soft toys, produced in unlimited edition, and wildly collectable. Regard this as a sneak preview for Takashi’s first ever show of graphic works and multiples in Africa, due to hit Cape Town in November, hosted by 34LONG.

There are more attractions: visitors may look forward to seeing and purchasing works by well known South African artists like Norman Catherine, Claudette Schreuders, Robert Hodgins and others. Prints have been selected, conservation mounted and framed and are in mint condition.

Of particular interest will be a three meter print by Matthew Hindley and Peter Eastman, Bad mood train tracks , an edition of only three, from their Mashups collaboration.

Limited photographic editions are hot property right now, fetching record prices at auctions and in galleries internationally. The trend favours multiple images, as opposed to unique pieces, as a way of enhancing art collections. The serious collector of limited editions is sure to find something to get excited about on this show!

34Long is taking to London soon, to scout for more international works to present to their South African clientele on this show. Who knows: the expedition may produce surprises and treasures. You will have to come and see!
